Kaufman, Gerald: 70.8% growth
Gerald Kaufman is one of Labour's most senior backbenchers, with an impressive political CV. He first fought a general election in 1955, and has been in the Commons since 1970. Mr Kaufman was very close to Harold Wilson, serving on his staff in the 1960s and as a member of his informal "kitchen cabinet". He served as a minister throughout the Labour governments of the 1970s, and between 1983 and 1992 successively held the positions of shadow home secretary and shadow foreign secretary. Since 1992, he has served as chair of the Commons culture, media and sport (former national heritage) select committee, in which position he has managed to retain a high public profile with his acerbic style.
